I have 28 awesome first graders that welcome me daily. We start the day at 7:35 am ready to go. The children help each other write the morning message in their journals and complete their reading folder activities. By now, they are experts when it comes to classroom routines. I am really proud of the progress they have made this year. Many of the children face diverse hardships and lack the resources to thrive.
The class consists of Special, General, and English Language Learners.
As the day continues, we gather on a small carpet for whole group instruction, such as a read aloud, where children engage in accountable talk after listening to the story. When they hear the bell, they transition into a variety of teacher-prepared centers. During this time, I instruct guided reading while the other students are completing individual assignments.
The children are very motivated to learn and are always excited when I introduce a new skill. They were so thrilled when our last class project was funded, and they truly appreciated it. I was impressed at the way they were so focused on writing thank you notes and drawing pictures.
Our Math instruction consists of four groups incorporating a workshop center based instructional model. I have four color-coded stations. Each child has a math binder and is responsible to complete a specific task on a daily basis. First graders need easy access to materials. This fosters independence and motivation.
These carts will support math workshop and flexible learning.
It will support individual mental math strategies depending on a child's needs. Children will know exactly where the coins, blocks, flash cards, place value charts, chips, rods.
