This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from Trotwood, Ohio. Many come from low income families who live pay check to check. Students receive free breakfast and lunch at school each day.
This school has limited income to purchase new furniture and supplies for students coming to school for the first time.
Some of my students come to school with no supplies or a backpack!
My Kindergartners would love to have a classroom where they can explore, write, and color. Children should have a classroom that is clean and safe for their learning. However, this burden relies on the teacher to purchase. The cost of school supplies for families that have multiple children can be a hardship on the family's basic needs.
All children should have the opportunity to learn in a Kindergarten class!
My Project
Students come together on a class carpet to have a morning meeting, listen to stories, and get direct instruction on math skills.
Sitting on their own special spot, makes students feel welcome and care for in my classroom.
Students sit on the carpet as we talk about the calendar, days of the week, weather, and have number talks.
I also read daily to them. We discuss author and illustrator, parts of a book and main idea of stories. Students love to sing and read sight words on our class carpet.
Our class carpet meets many purposes and is where we come together as a community of learners and become friends!
