My students need a new rug to sit on when they are on the floor.
This project expired on February 12, 2016.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Each day we begin by greeting each other and sharing important information about ourselves. We do lots of sharing at the carpet on the floor.
My school is in an economically disadvantaged area.
Over half of my students come from homes where English is not spoken. We have Hmong, Marshallese, Hispanic, Russian, and many more newcomers. Although they are socially and economically challenged, they are eager to learn and happy to be at school.
Right now, our floor rug is about 20 years old and only seats 20 kindergarten-sized kids. I have a first grade class with 28 students. If they all want to fit on the rug, they must share the spaces. This is okay for a few minutes, but there is a lot of learning the kiddos do that require them to be close up, like reading and math. It helps them to focus in on a particular task or skill.
If the children had a larger rug to sit on it would be more comfortable and easier for them to learn.
Sometimes it is hard for them to concentrate when other bodies are touching them. I know they would be so grateful and appreciative to have a new and larger rug.
