Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students belong to a school whose reading program is top notch. My fellow educators have done a tremendous job building a culture of reading, writing, and learning among the student body. The passion for the printed word here is palpable.
Situated in Newhall, California within the Santa Clarita Valley, our school is home to a very diverse group of students, roughly half of whom come from low income backgrounds.
Many of the students who attend this particular high school are recent immigrants who speak English as a second language, and they are still acquiring the skills needed to speak English fluently.
My Project
Thank you for helping me and my fellow educators continue to cultivate a passion for reading among our student population through our school's reading program, Carpe Librum! (Seize the book!) Carpe Librum! is a movement that will inspire students to find the power of reading. Students will have access to high-interest young adult novels & challenging classics in our classroom library and will be encouraged to steal every extra moment to read. A reading-rich environment will lead to students who are continually discussing, recommending, and sharing books. They will gradually build the stamina, vocabulary and confidence needed to tackle increasingly challenging text.
Help fill my book nook with wall-to-wall books that connect to the lives of young adults.
Remember the book that got you hooked? My students need that hook. They need to experience the moment when you simply cannot put the book down. Help them to find the magic and embark on a journey of curiosity, discovery, and joy. Carpe Librum!
