My students need an art activity book, along with books like The Recess Queen and Ghost Boy to help them build compassion and empathy, enhance coping skills, deal with grief and much more!
My students live in a vibrant section of Philadelphia. They have social, emotional, and financial burdens at home. Many of my students have experienced trauma personally in their home lives. My students come from all over the world. Some have spent time in refugee camps, or survived natural disasters.
Yet, even with all their hardships, they have hope.
They have dreams and goals and they have choices to make about their future. As the school counselor, I try to empower my students to make positive, real-world decisions that they can be proud of.
My Project
The "CBT Art Therapy Activity Book" will be used in individual or group work. The lessons use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and art as therapy to address outcomes including improved self-esteem, emotional well being, anger management, coping with change and loss, problem solving and future planning.
Students will benefit from reading and/or listening to acclaimed stories such as "My Mouth is Volcano", "The Recess Queen", "Ghost Boy", "Fish in a Tree", "Rules", "Counting by 7's" and "Out of My Mind" during small group or classroom guidance lessons to promote empathy and compassion as well as encourage meaningful discussion.
Following reading Claudette Colvin's "Twice Toward Justice", the middle school students will work on a social justice project of their choice. The goal of the project is to make an impact on the school community such as bullying or school safety.
