The students in my classroom come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing unites them- they have all been identified as gifted learners. Gifted learners experience education in a multitude of ways. My district allows me to teach these students and offer them opportunities to explore areas that interest them the most.
By allowing these unique students the time to develop their gifts, they have a higher overall satisfaction with school.
These students also learn how to manage time and plan for big outcomes (projects, presentations, etc).
My Project
This summer I was able to get a grant for pets in the classroom. It allowed me to bring a sweet guinea pig into our classroom. My students love him, and they have gained so much from having him in our classroom. They read with him. They test with him. He provides them comfort when they are feeling anxious. He makes our classroom a happier place.
The guinea pig has taught my students patience, responsibility, and empathy.
The materials in this project, like a large cage, play yard, and bedding, will directly benefit our guinea pig's living arrangement and continue to encourage student responsibility in taking care of him. Books about guinea pigs will help my students learn specifics about guinea pigs in order to best care for him and even train him.
This project might also allow for us to bring a companion guinea pig into the classroom as well. Either way, the funding and materials from this project will help my students continue to grow in their responsibility and compassion for living things.
