At Oakton Elementary, the energy of the students is intoxicating!
When given a fair opportunity to showcase their brilliance, these little Cougars will pounce on your heart.
More than 60% of the students at Oakton are labeled as low income (identified as eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches, live in substitute care, or whose families receive public aid).
The student population is comprised of over 35% Black students, 28% Latinx students.
While our school is located in a suburb, we in a the part of the suburb that struggles the most. We come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, but our common thread is our desire to grow and learn!
My Project
At Oakton Elementary, we have completely revamped our perspective on PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). As a staff we are no longer focusing on little trinkets or items from the toy aisle at a store. We are instead facilitating authentic experiences for students. Ranging from creating their own calming jars with a social worker to shooting hoops with the principal, these experiences have shifted the culture of our school in more ways than one.
When students are excited, they're capable of anything.
As we enter our second year with our experiential perspective, we're looking to take things a step further!
To continue the growth of a communal, school-based experience we're starting a t-shirt campaign. But not just the same shirt for the entire school, we're talking about a different colored shirt for EVERY GRADE LEVEL!
Kindergarten - Tie-Dye
1st Grade - Yellow
2nd Grade - Blue
3rd Grade - Green
4th Grade - Orange & White
5th Grade - Black & Grey
With the help of Chicago's very own "Strange Cargo Tees", this can be one of the most colorful school years the Oakton Cougars have ever experienced! Help us bring excitement, school pride and smiles in our hallways for years to come!
