Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from different backgrounds. All of them have some learning challenges. They are special education teenagers. In our high school they attend general education classes, but they have me as a case manager.
They spend 12% of the time in my room, where they use a reading program and complete work for their general education classes with support.
Most of the students are low income. They do not have many resources, but they enjoy what we offer at school. Some of them are seniors, and they have already started the application for our city's Community College.
My Project
We will start the Project with a class discussion about where each student is in their post high school education and career planning. They have access to a computer with internet, and to colored pencils and markers.
Students will elaborate their college and career planning.
Each student will be given a folder, paper, pencil, some labels, and post-it. They will plan their future career directing it towards their dream job, and creating an illustration and/or writing about it, at first. They will use the computers to check a suggested list of websites related to education and careers, and they will take notes about important information on handouts. Their annotations, drawings and plans will be kept in the folder.
In subsequent sessions, students will have activities related to the project, such as each will display a short description of their desired career around the classroom, and the other students will walk around reading it, and adding comments or questions using post-it. They will discuss the results. Students will be supported to contact professionals working in careers they are interested. We will invite at least one professional to visit our classroom and talk about their education and career experience. Their folders will be displayed.
