We are a magnet high school in New Haven, CT that serves the city, as well as the suburbs surrounding it. Our students choose to come to our school to study either business or allied health. All students qualify for free lunch and often receive fee waivers for standardized testing.
Our students are some of the most interesting and driven kids you will ever meet.
Many travel over an hour to attend our school and take advantage of the opportunities we offer. Still others come to school despite a number of challenges they face outside of school.
My Project
Often times students struggle to attend school when their very basic needs can't be met at home. To date, 70% of the students at Career qualify for our free lunch program meaning their families struggle financially. If a family is unable to meet the basic needs of their children this can lead to a multitude of other challenges including difficulty engaging in or even focusing on academics, feelings of embarrassment, anxiety or other emotional difficulties.
Donating to my project will provide students with some basic needs and essential items, reducing an area of stress and ultimately increasing their attendance and engagement in their academics.
I have included, in this project, basic winter accessories as well as toiletries. On a daily basis students are asking staff they trust for assistance in providing these items. If they know there is a centralized location where they can, with no questions asked, have access to these items we may be able to reach even more students in need.
As a social worker I see first hand how non-academic difficulties can impact a student's achievement. Not only will this project help to satisfy their need for personal care, it will also remind them they are part of a school community that cares.
