Aloha! My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, they are on the autism spectrum and work with other conditions that affect their daily lives. My main concern is that their brains function differently than typically developed peers at their same age. Although some of them are verbal and capable of social interaction, it's a constant struggle to keep them all regulated and engaged with their academic career. I teach basic life skills. As my students are wired differently, teaching typical academic curricula is not always most appropriate.
My goal this year is to give them skills that they can use to become functioning community contributors and give back to the community.
They are only allowed to stay in school through their 21st year, on their 22nd birthday, my students age out and we need to send them off into the world. I want to get supplies that can help me on my mission to provide them with skills they can acquire and practice while in school and then apply it to the community and world at large.
My Project
After becoming fatigued of learning and practicing various daily living skills, a workout mat will serve as a space to lay down or as a cool down area. The pencil sharpener has different thickness sizes for larger writing utensils to assist with fine motor skills and writing acquisition. A desk lamp will light a specific area with dimming features for helping calm and regulate emotions.
Light covers will be used to create a more welcoming and calming work environment; they will help eliminate glare headaches and eye strain from harsh artificial light.
Gross motor skills and mobility are necessary to complete a variety of daily activities. During more movement activities, other items will help with acquiring and practicing various skills. The yoga mats will be used during our daily stretching routine instead of sitting on the hard floor. A portable speaker will be used during inside and outside activities.
Sitting in a desk chair for hours on end can make the back or neck sore, the wheelchair memory foam chair cushion is for lower back & tailbone pain relief.
