Career Closet to Help Students Pursue Their Professional Dreams

Help me give my students the equipment they need to successfully create and operate a Career Closet for the students in our school; they recently recognized a need for this among their peers and are highly motivated.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Studio Art and Advanced Placement (AP) Art: 2-D Design at a small NYC Title I public high school that is co-located with 5 other schools in a large campus building. I also am part of our school's College- and Career-Readiness Team.

The majority of the students I work with are energetic, enthusiastic, curious, and motivated to prepare for their futures.

Many of them make very long commutes every day, and a lot of them take a rigorous course load, including multiple AP and/or College Now classes.

My Project

This year I am working with a large group of 10th grade students in our school who voluntarily want to improve their job-readiness skills. We have partnered with a local organization to provide workshops in resume writing, how to prepare for an interview, soft skills like nonverbal communication, and appropriate professional attire. When we recently had a site visit to a corporate setting, I discovered that, even though students knew what was appropriate to wear, many of them simply did not have any of these items. Some students didn't turn in permission slips initially; when I asked why, it became apparent that clothing was the issue. When I told them they could wear their NJROTC uniforms, they immediately turned in their permission slips and attended the site visit. In some cases where students did wear clothing items that could be considered appropriate professional attire, the items were ill-fitting, either outgrown or borrowed from someone on short notice.

Two of the students who are part of this job-readiness cohort suggested that we create a Career Closet for our school; it was clear that the students truly did want to attend, but clothing had almost become a barrier to their participation.

These two students have since created a proposal, presented it to our administrators, and secured with our administrators' approval a suite of small rooms in our school that have gone unused. We have been able to hire these students through a special grant and now they are working 2-4 hours per week after school to make this Career Closet a reality. The students have already secured a large amount of clothing donations; for this Donors Choose grant, we are requesting the hardware items that we will need to properly organize, operate and maintain a functional Career Closet for years to come.
