This is a separate school that serves students ages three to twenty-one with severe intellectual disabilities. Many of these students have concurrent challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Families find it difficult to take the children out into the community once they have returned home from school due to the transportation of wheelchairs and behaviors. Our focus is to provide opportunities for students to explore and develop independent functioning by addressing students’ individual needs. Through home, school and community involvement, we create an educational environment to maximize student success. Being the Daily Living teacher, I am fortunate to see all 125 students each week. Many students require hand over hand assistance to complete an activity and most are non-verbal.
My Project
Having a Cricut machine in the room will give the students the opportunity to design decorations for greeting cards, gift tags, and other projects. These projects will give the students opportunity to make choices, follow multi-step directions and assemble the items they produce.
Students will be able to perform vocational jobs in which they use a variety of tools, accomplish a variety of tasks, and develop an independence that may carry over to a job setting.
With these tools, our students will be able to incorporate their Individual Education Plans objectives (counting, sorting, shapes/colors, taking turns, following directions and communication) into producing items that they can then share with others around them.
