Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an elementary physical education and health teacher in a large, urban school district. Our students come from many diverse backgrounds from all around the world. They each bring something exciting and enriching into the lives of others. My goal is to always provide my students with an environment where they feel successful, motivated, nurtured - and most importantly, safe. My students come into school eager and excited to take on the day. I am extremely grateful to work with these wonderful children each and every day.

COVID is temporarily changing how physical education instruction will be delivered to my eager learners. These changes may stick around for quite some time. As a result, this poses a challenge to all of my students, but particularly to my students with special needs and my many students who receive ELL (English Language Learner) services. These children truly thrive with the use of visual aids and activities which are modeled by the teacher and their peers. I am looking for new ways to continue to keep all of my learners engaged and moving.
My Project
As our district is beginning to open full-time for in-person instruction during the COVID pandemic, I am constantly looking for ways to continue to keep my learners active and safe! I always thrive to create new and fun activities for my learners. This year has certainly been more of a challenge, which is why I'm excited to potentially offer my students socially-distanced cardio drumming! This is a great interdisciplinary instructional unit which will engage all of my learners of varying ages and ability levels! I can incorporate music, pattern recognition, bilateral coordination (which helps tracking and reading), cardio and fitness into each lesson. Cardio drumming would excite our our young, energetic and enthusiastic learners, and keep them active and engaged while getting their moving minutes in! This equipment will help allow my learners to safely participate and engage in lessons and activities with their peers, while also allowing for the required social distancing. Please help me to keep their days ahead safe, active, instructional, and fun.
