Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students, who face many daily challenges, really rise when given opportunities to create and design. There is little time or money to purchase things like legos or creation kits at home due to lack of resources. A large percentage of families (72%) qualify for free or reduced-priced meals due to income levels. Opportunities for access to technology or creative project kits are very rare or very limited. Despite this obstacle, our students use recycled materials to create cards for teachers or special passion projects.
I want to give students more opportunities to create using recycled cardboard by utilizing a Makedo kit - a kit that allows them to safely cut and connect cardboard.
My Project
Students love to create things out of old boxes. As kids, we all have experienced the joy of a great big box that we spent time cutting and painting to make a car, plane or house. It is a joyous time of creation. If you are a student who lacks basic tools like pencils, there aren't many ways to create these items at home - but the desire to create is there.
My students are needing tools, such as a Makedo kit, to safely create and develop some STEAM related projects that relate to their standards and reclaiming the joy of creating.
The Makedo kits will provide cardboard construction tools for safely cutting and assembling these projects. The two kits will be shared between six primary classes during different times of the year. They will add to our STEAM lessons and integrate our Social Studies, Science, and Math standards to make learning joyous and fun.
