My students now have a club that will allow them to socialize with regular education students during lunch, but would benefit from competing in tournaments with other students (sped included) and adults to help continue their socialization, and help them make even more connections.
I have picked cards, pre-made deck ideas, prizes to encourage participation and fun and set up tournaments
Many of my special education students have an exceptionally hard time socializing. Socializing out of their comfort zone is difficult. Socialization is an integral part of a child’s development. All my students love playing cards (Yu Gi Oh, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon). This club will encourage socialization.
They mostly have limited social skills and seem to group together often. Our middle school is a safe, inclusive community where everyone is actively engaged in learning. Enrollment is approximately 800. Our site seems to have a great community of acceptance and large special education population with many Special Education classes on site. I would like to integrate them into the community more
My Project
This project will allow the students to take the games they are learning to play, and the social skills they are practicing and extend them beyond the classroom. The ability for the students to use more sophisticated cards and strategies and compete against students and young adults from other areas will do two things. It will help improve their social abilities and allow them a chance to be part of a bigger community. It will also allow them the opportunity to improve logic skills, compare deck ideas and improve strategies. The final positive is, it will give them something to look forward to and can be used as a reward in helping to maintain their interest in school.
