I work in a Title I school where over 60% of our population qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program, and a number of our students struggle with poverty. We have a very diverse student body in our school of almost 1,500 students. There is an especially large population of Native American students that I have the privilege to serve as their Native American studies teacher. I am also able to work with our students who need a boost with their reading skills, as a Reading Specialist for the Upper Elementary.
Despite the challenges that my students may be facing in their daily lives, I work with some of the most optimistic and driven kiddos out there.
The diverse environment that we serve at our school brings with it the challenge of finding the best ways to meet the individual learning styles of all our students. While obtaining the resources needed to ensure that my students achieve their goals may be difficult, the joy on their faces when they experience success is priceless and what inspires my love of teaching.
My students are amazing kids that like to learn new things in fun and engaging ways. We would like a Soda Stream machine, water enhancing flavors, tasting cups, and water bottles in order to enhance our health and our learning.
The primary focus will be to introduce students too much more healthy hydration choices than their usual selections of sodas and sugary juice drinks.
However, what's the point of teaching students a lesson with only one goal? We will also be using the tasting experience to enhance our learning. We love working with food in our class to improve our reading and writing skills. Students will practice observing each other and using their 5 senses to truly explore the different water flavors. We will work with multiple writing styles to express our findings. Students will improve their vocabulary, writing skills, use of figurative language and so much more through the different activities we will design around our taste tests. Thank you very much for helping to bring engaging and exciting lessons to our class!
