Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are superheroes in the classroom. We have many strengths and we use our skills and knowledge we are learning to overcome and work through our weaknesses. As a team, we want to move forward in our reading and writing. We are ready for any challenge! We are learning with the right mindset, we can persevere!
My school is located in an urban school district.
My fantastic fourth graders are hungry to always learn more. They get upset when they have to put a textbook away, and will ask to bring it home to read our current story or topic some more. Some of them are beginning to see that school is getting more intense as this is a big exam year, but learning is more about what skills and tools they need for life and school, not just to take a test.
We want to build our classroom community with a growth mindset, leadership skills, courage to take chances, and build social-emotional skills and strategies to handle academic and personal challenges.
My Project
I tell my students if they get hooked, or completely enthralled with anything in life, it should be books. Falling for an author, genre, style, or character of a book can have a life-long profound effect on students. Kids love cartoons and comics. We enjoyed them in our childhood, and for some of us, even today as adults. They enjoy seeing the dialogue and conflict between the characters. They learn about problem-solving, reading strategies, and life long reading skills without it feeling like "another lesson", when they do reader's theaters, engage in comic/cartoon readings, and other engaging literacy.
It is so important that we expose our students to a variety of methods of reading, so they may develop their own personal connections to literacy.
We live in a world of technology and accessing what we want or need quickly. We cannot leave the fundamental basics of childhood development behind in our fast-paced world. Please support my students with enjoying the basics of reading through a timeless enjoyment of comics/cartoons.
