This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am in the midst of teaching American Social History Through Film at my school and I'm in desperate need for working video cameras. In addition to studying American History through film and media, my students are making films, documenting their experiences, and exploring their cultures and their city. Since the class began in September, their films have grown dramatically in their size, seriousness, and scope. What started out as playing around with the camera has become a much more serious venture; students storyboard their stories and write scripts, and have become increasingly skillful in editing and narrative technique. Students connect the history of America (subcultures, diversity, the effects of law and policy) with their films. For example, at the moment, students are putting the final touches on short documentaries about "undergrounds" in America, in relation to learning about the Cold War. Teaching film has also been a fascinating vehicle for teaching narrative structure, characterization, and critical thinking. Students film their footage, and then edit and shape their pieces into short films using iMovie. At the moment, we have three semi-operating cameras for thirty students. It makes any film project a scheduling nightmare, and having to work in big groups often gets in the way of individual creativity and achievement. I would like to get at the very least ONE more camera to help these students capture their vision!
