Capturing Students' Interests with Engaging Book Series

Help me give my students 12 new book series that will introduce my young readers to a broad range of topics, characters, and help stretch their imagination as readers.

My Students

With almost 95% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch, our school has the biggest population of low-income students in the district. I can only imagine the kinds of hardships they are facing every day. Despite all that, they enter my classroom full of energy, with the brightest smiles on their faces and a positive attitude.

They deserve the best education we can provide with tools, resources, and technology necessary to help them be the best they can be.

Being part of a culturally diverse classroom, and working with many immigrant and high-needs students, my belief in equal educational opportunity has only strengthened. My students are not only bright, capable, and hard-working, but they are also kind, friendly and respectful to one another.

I feel extremely blessed to work with these children. They teach me about what it means to stay focused, how to persevere when faced with challenges, and how to push myself to do better every day. I am so proud of each and every one of them!

My Project

Our current reading unit is on different book series. Even before introducing this unit, my students would seek out books in the library that were similar to books that I read aloud in class. They love reading and learning about specific characters and the adventures those characters go on.

This project includes a broad range of books at various reading levels that correspond to the needs of my students.

These books include characters with distinct traits. Reading about characters with these traits would encourage my students to think deeply about the characters and how they develop and change over time. There are even non-fiction books to help us compare and contrast information across books. In addition, I picked out popular books that would capture my students' interest, such as Amelia Bedelia, Pinkalicious, Press Start, Dog Man, Fox and His Friends, Mercy Watson, Fly Guy, and the National Geographic book series.

I've noticed tremendous change during independent reading time. Their stamina has increased from 15 mins a day to more than 30 minutes. With the addition of these books, I am certain they will grow as readers and their imagination will stretch to its limit!
