Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning about the community you live in is good from a book, but it is so much more to go out and explore the community you live in and then bring back parts of your community to share and teach others about.
I am a 2nd grade teacher in a New York Public School in a low-income/high needs area.
Over half the student population of the school are currently classified as English Language Learners. My class is made up of beginning English Language Learners who are working very hard to acquire the language.
My Project
The Social Studies curriculum for 2nd grade is all about our city, the places, the people and the jobs that are part of the community.
I can show pictures of communities that I have found on the Internet, but I believe there is nothing better than first hand experiences. With the materials I am asking for (2 digital cameras and a flip camcorder) my students will be able to go out into their community, finding the people and places we talk about to bring the outside into our classroom.
We wont be learning about any community, we will be learning about OUR community!

They will learn more than what books have to offer; you will help them see that there is more to their community than the corner they wait for the bus on, or the corner store they buy milk for their breakfast at. They will learn about the fire station 2 blocks away and the crossing guard who helps their friends get to school safely. You will help open up their hearts and minds!
