We are a low income school in a city in Mississippi. We take pride in high expectations and high standards for all students. Our students come from a wide range of families. We have a great staff dedicated to ensuring student safety and a positive environment for those students who come to school for more than learning. We look at our classrooms like a family. I am often called "mom" by mistake in my fifth grade class. I see that it is my responsibility to teach the children more than just standards. We need to teach responsibility, respect, integrity, self-control, discipline, and love. It is very important to involve all students daily in the classroom and make them feel like they are part of our amazing school family.
My Project
I created a newspaper called Paw Printz for our school. My newspaper staff, which are all fifth graders, actually conduct interviews, write articles, and take pictures around our school and community. Our city newspaper, The Columbian Progress, inserts our newspaper as part of theirs so everyone in the community gets to read our articles. We would like to get a nice digital camera to take high-quality pictures so ours match the ones that the real newspaper has. Our pictures sometimes come out blurry and can't be used in the community paper. This will ensure that all of our pictures will be of the highest quality so they can all go in the paper. They will also learn how to properly use a camera and how to take pictures from lessons with the Columbian Progress photographer.
