My Students

Our elementary school is home to approximately 524 Pre-K through fifth grade students from many diverse cultural backgrounds! We celebrate our differences and use our cultural diversity as a springboard for enjoying and appreciating our cultural distinctions! Our school is "home away from home" for our students where learning is fun and everyone is accepted, appreciated and celebrated!

"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up".

The great Vince Lombardi stated these words. One huge challenge is just a safe space to play, be a child and learn skills. This donation will enable us to offer a positive solution to this challenge.

My students are mostly African American and Latino. They are always asking if they can come early or seeking experiences and activities after-school that will satisfy their needs to be with positive adults, practice skills, and play team sports.

My Project

MATH: students will have hands on experience measuring area, length, height and width in large spaces for the actual garden design. They will also learn to measure volume and calculate the amount of water needed for particular areas.

SCIENCE: Students will experience plants growing from seeds to harvest and see how the seed is a complete eco system in itself waiting to be in the right environment to produce.

They will experience eating food straight from the garden and be able to compare the taste to food that has traveled long distances. They will plant botanicals that will attract butterflies, bees and birds and create a new habitat for them. Overall they will learn the importance of being good stewards of the earth. By collecting the eggs of certain butterflies they will be able to watch the cycle of grow. We will have a butterfly release party at the end of the cycle to promote science.

LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS: Each student will keep a journal and document observations in the garden as well as nature in general.

TECHNOLOGY: Students will use cameras to create video and picture diaries to document aesthetic and environmental changes that occur in the garden to share with the school, parents and the community.

ART: Making mosaic stepping stones, signs, and other garden art that will improve our urban setting making it more aesthetically pleasing. In groups students will keep ART journals in order to document their classroom projects. Regular art exhibits of students NATURE art will be exhibited throughout the school.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Students will wear pedometers and heart rate monitors while working in the garden in order to assess their physical activity levels during different times. Students will also discuss and document the nutritional value of the foods grown using graphs.
