Social studies is a diverse subject, that the majority of my middle schoolers approach with dread. My students are desperate for technology that helps connect our content to their lives. The diverse student body of our school needs access to technology to support their success in social studies.
Students at my school come from an area of the city that is high poverty, over 85% receive free lunch.
Our mindset has been changing over recent years to show every student the potential within, and help them achieve the very large dreams they have.
My Project
Throughout the year my students do a number of hands on projects. As we study different regions of the world, the students create newscasts, documentaries, and skits. These projects would be more beneficial to my students if they had camcorders to film their projects. My students do not always have access at home and school to technology. They embrace technology use when available.
The camcorders and tripods will allow them to do more with their projects and make better final projects.
The use of technology allows my students to connect to the content in ways that they haven't before. This technology will allow my students to work on collaboration and life skills. They can learn to work to together constructively with their classmates. They can also learn real world life skills that can help them in future careers. The students will learn how to create tangible products with information they have researched.
