My students need 5 copies each of 11 novels that will prove to be powerful reads, encouraging them to step into the world of another's experience and ponder their own feelings and beliefs.
It takes just one interesting book to shape a student's relationship with reading. A student's reading experience should be meaningful and enjoyable. I teach in a high-poverty area, currently in a self-contained fourth grade classroom, and will teach next year at the sixth grade level. I want to offer my varied-ability students reading experiences that will challenge their emotions, perspectives, and ideas. The key to reading enjoyment is choice, and these intriguing books would offer my students the choice of reading stories they are drawn to; the compelling themes within these novels are guaranteed to spark engaging discussions.
My classroom library lacks books with powerful themes of survival, adventure, and perseverance. Monies for classroom supplies are tight during our current economic times, and this opportunity would allow me the much-needed boost that my reading library needs. My students don't have the opportunity to read many books of this caliber. The impact of such themed-books would challenge their thinking, feelings, and outlook on life in general.
I need multiple sets of books with themes that will draw the reader in: survival, adventure, life choices, overcoming one's fears, and perseverance. These books will be used in Literature Circle format, in which students form small groups based on their choice of book, periodically holding group meetings to engage in authentic book discussions. A greater appreciation for literature read will encourage students to continue with a more personal, enriched and fulfilling literary experience, while simultaneously teaching them to use in-depth questioning and personal connections to gain a deeper awareness of the world they live in.
Your support will offer my students a greater appreciation for literature, encouraging them to continue with a more enriched and fulfilling literary experience. You will make it possible for our Literature Circle experience to reach new levels of communicative authenticity and meaning. The students will be excited about what they are reading and thus, group discussions will be strengthened and challenge the perspectives of all involved. Your help can influence a student's decision about whether or not the literature he/she reads will spark the desire to reach out for another book in the future.
