The cost of a digital camera, memory card, and battery recharger is $255, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
My twenty-five second grade ESL students are WILD about ?Flat Stanley,? by Jeff Brown. They love the idea of becoming flat, and have already begun to imagine where they would go and what they would do if they woke up flat one day.
We would love to participate in the Flat Stanley project. This is a global project that connects kids around the themes in this great fiction book: kids create and mail "Flat Stanleys" to other children around the world and then document the adventures they have with the "visiting" Flat Stanley. (www.flatstanley.com)
My second graders would greatly benefit from participating in the technological aspects of this program, including Email Notes. Email notes are like pen pal letters, with the added benefit of exposing students to email communication. Students can be taught to use computers, to type, to use email, to add attachments, and even to create a class website. The ability to send digital images over email would eliminate the costs of printing and mailing images.
At our South Bronx School where 100% of students qualify for free lunch, resources are clearly limited. However, a digital camera would nicely compliment the resources that we do have, including a laptop cart available for use and several overhead film projectors. Students would not only send Flat Stanleys over email, but would also use the digital cameras to create Dioramas depicting their (real or imaginary) adventures with or as Stanely, to create a Travel Brochure highlighting the places that Flat Stanley visits in the South Bronx and beyond, or even to document their own work in the classroom to be included on a CD for their portfolios.
I would like for these enthusiastic, creative students to have the experience of using a digital camera on a regular basis. I would like for them to have an authentic audience for their projects, stories, brochures, and letters through this multicultural, multilingual, and global project.
The materials needed for this project are: a digital camera, memory card, batteries and battery charger for the camera. With these materials, twenty-five second graders from the South Bronx would work toward a place in a global community of learners. Thank you.
