My students need graphic novels like, Through the Woods, to increase their reading skills, March: Book One through Three, and others, as well as broaden their understanding of Civil Rights, historical topics, and classic literature.
The students in this rural Maine community have limited opportunities when it comes to education. Despite that, these local students are eager to learn. Since many students from this area come from low-income households, we hope to provide reading material and graphic novel adaptations of literature from which students can gain an education.
Though our school lacks funding, local high school students are excited to explore the world of literature through graphic novels.
The library budget has been frozen for this year, and our graphic novel section is extremely limited. Many students who struggle with reading find graphic novels enlightening and engaging. We hope to offer works which will make students think critically about the topics they are introduced to.
My Project
My students need graphic novels like, Through the Woods, to increase their reading skills, March: Book One through Three, and others, as well as broaden their understanding of Civil Rights, historical topics, and classic literature. Graphic novels, while often undervalued, make students better readers. They can motivate reluctant readers, engaging them in plot and dialogue. They can also help speed readers to slow down and look at the images, so they take more time to fully ingest the plot.
Graphic novels not only showcase artwork, but can help students with reading comprehension, as they assist with understanding language.
Graphic novels can be paired with classic literature in order to enhance reading, as well as introduce complicated topics such as Civil Rights, diversity, and history. Overall, graphic novels are an excellent way to promote literacy while keeping students engaged and increasing self esteem.
