Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The best thing I can hear as a reading teacher is "Are there more of these?" Finding that "just right" book for each student is an adventure and witnessing the excitement they have when they finally come across one is immensely rewarding.
I teach at a diverse Title 1 middle school in Texas; the majority of my students are reluctant readers struggling with on-level reading due to various reasons (English Language Learner, learning disability, etc.).
My goal is to help my students grow as readers in a safe and encouraging environment. My students love to sprawl around the room as they absorb new books from our class library. Some students are not exposed to many books at home and school is one of their few opportunities to engage with new books.
My Project
I am requesting books of various genres with diverse characters and settings so that I can bring First Chapter Fridays to my classroom this year.
As a Reading Intervention teacher, the majority of my students read below level; exposing them to a wide variety of genres and diverse characters will help engage otherwise reluctant readers in meaningful and relevant learning.
Each Friday, I will highlight a different book during book talks. I will also read aloud the first chapter of the book, and ONLY the first chapter. The goal is to leave my students hanging and eager to know what happens next. Once their interest is piqued, students are more likely to give a book a chance. Book talks have made such a positive impact in my classroom and I would love to take them to the next level by incorporating First Chapter Fridays. All of my students, even my reluctant readers, love being read to- especially when it is a book they can relate to.
High-interest books (i.e. The Sun is Also a Star, A Night Divided, Stupid Fast, Ghost Boys, Renegades) will help my students increase their reading stamina, expose them to new worlds and ideas, and inspire meaningful conversations. The sole purpose of First Chapter Fridays is to promote literacy and these books will help do just that!
