Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a sixth grade special education teacher currently working in a school that is under review as a result of the high percentages of failing test scores; in our efforts to raise test scores we have taken on a new initiative for the upcoming school year. It is essential for students to have access to words - in all subjects - in order to be maximally effective learners. As such, the importance of reading and writing has proceeded beyond English classes and into all subject classes. Consequently, it is important that children be able to read critically and understand what they are reading. In order to do this, especially when being presented with exuberant amounts of new words from various subject areas, students must have access to dictionaries in the classroom. With a single dictionary for an entire class of students, effective learning cannot occur. As a result of the importance of children being engaged in reading and writing, and thus being able to look up the definitions of words, I am in need of a class set of dictionaries for my self-contained special education classroom of 12 students. Please enable my students to be captivated by the new words they are encountering in their extended reading in numerous subjects by sending them dictionaries that will expand their vocabulary horizons.
