I am fortunate to teach a diverse group of students with a strong sense of community and loyalty. Many of my students have hated school for a long time and had given up. However, through various instructional strategies, patience, and care we reinvigorating their desire to learn, building their self-confidence, and setting career and post-secondary education goals.
They have faced adversity and failures many, many times over, but with the help of their teachers, peers, families, and their own self-determination they are striving to earn their diploma and graduate on time at our continuation high school.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or a vocational/trade training program.
My Project
I teach at an urban, Title I Continuation High School. Many of my students have struggled to succeed at school. Our school shares a library on a neighboring school campus, however, the library is not easily accessible for our students since they are not allowed over unaccompanied during school hours. Having a classroom library is essential in order to provide students access to books.
From expanding my classroom library, I have found that having books with illustrations can help engage a student who is resistant towards reading, and it can be a great aid for students who are English language learners.
This project is filled with classic literature, historical graphic novels, mythology, and fairy tales from varying cultures to engage students who are resistant to reading, but receptive towards art and learning about cultures of the past.
