Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Captivating and cultivating young minds through reading! A typical day in the media center is quiet and mentally adventuresome. I would like all my students in grades 2 -3 to be on or above reading level. The biggest challenge we face is we do not have enough books at that level.
The students in second and third grade are active, curious, enthusiastic students knocking down the limits of learning.
The schools is a great learning environment and getting better daily.
The school has diverse population with many students coming from all over the city to take part in the Spanish immersion program. They are are taught certain classes in Spanish and others in English. When they exit the sixth grade they are fluent in two languages.
The students in second and third grades are at that age where they are becoming emergent readers and need as many books as possible to keep their minds cultivated and open. Due to library budget cuts and less funds coming to the inner-city schools we just do not have enough resources to purchase enough books at each grade level. We noticed that our book selection at that level is dwindling and we need your help!
My Project
The students will be able to go to the media center and be able to find books at their reading level and interest level. Through self- sustained reading, they will be able to increase their reading level to at grade level or above by having access to the latest and greatest titles that actually interest them. They will have more than one small cabinet of books at their level. When they come to the media center, they will be excited to have new books to chose from that they have not read. With more books that interest them and the more popular titles, they will read more, and they will not have to wait to several weeks to get the popular books other students in other districts have.
The donations will improve the media center because students in second and third grade will actually have more than one small section of books to chose from.
This is a group of students that are avid readers and devour the books they read. It will change my students lives for the better because they will be reading books they enjoy and will be excited about reading. They will be able to finish a book and find another one they enjoy to read without waiting for weeks.
