My class consists of 21 first grade students between the ages of six and seven. They come from various cultural backgrounds and have varying learning experiences. We are a Title I school, located in an urban area. We are a primary school, serving child development, Kindergarten, and first grade students.
One of the biggest challenges our teachers face is keeping our students fully engaged in the rigorous curriculum set forth by the district.
Our school continues to grow and grow, and there are just not enough resources to accommodate this growth. As a result, not every classroom is equipped with necessary supplies and furniture to enhance our students' learning. Our students will greatly benefit from a sit spot carpet, new magnetic dry erase boards, and problem solving dry erase boards for math.
My Project
Personal dry erase boards allow students to interact effectively with the lesson that is being taught. My class has always used personal dry erase boards, and the wear-and-tear of what we have left is evident of their continual use. During whole group instruction time, students gather in a designated area with dry erase boards on laps ready to actively participate in student-centered learning opportunities. Without an actual "sitting spot", my students have a hard time finding and staying in their own space; not to mention keeping track of their white boards, markers, and erasers. Trying to find and maintain a space to interact causes distractions and disengagement from learning. Providing students with a sit spot rug, brand new personal dry erase boards for math and literacy, and magnetic erasers will encourage the young students to actively participate in interactive lessons.
The sit spot carpet and the the new dry erase boards will minimize distractions and maximize learning.
The carpet and the whiteboards will be used during small group and whole group instruction. These materials will help my students work cooperatively, collaboratively, and successfully.
