Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in Title I school in a highly poverty-stricken area of NYC. The students, predominantly Hispanic and Black, are burdened with more responsibilities than can be imagined, yet they come to school each day and try to learn the lessons in front of them. The students and their parents' lives are plagued with the harsh realities of life and poverty. Many times, the task of putting food on the table has to take precedence over school. This hardship can cause a lack of focus and create a stressor that makes it nearly impossible to harness the students' abilities.
My Project
The books will be used to help grow our library! Our students are looking for new books that are of interest to them. The students are so excited to add new books to their library and helped pick the selection they wanted to read.
We want to keep our students reading with books that they WANT to read.
They are so interested in reading but have a limited choice when it comes to our classroom library. We will use the books for independent reading and our classroom book clubs!
"A reader lives 1000 lives before he dies, the man who never reads only lives 1." Help us give our students adventure through reading!
