My Students

The tornado that destroyed my high school also destroyed every textbook in that high school. That included all my novel sets that were used in the junior American Literature course. They were written by contemporary authors and dealt with relevant themes. We need novels back in our hands.

These students are juniors in an American Literature college prep survey course.

This high school is set in a high poverty area. These students are, for the most part, motivated to succeed and have shown previous success in order to be in this class. They need to be challenged, however, with subjects that encourage them to reach just a little farther.

My Project

"In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote is the first nonfiction novel -- a new genre. Capote is a master storyteller, and this is his masterpiece. I read this book when I was in high school many years ago, and now I want my students to have that same experience that I had way back then. Not only does this novel demonstrate exemplary writing and organization skills, but students will see that nonfiction -- which makes up a good deal of what we read on a daily basis -- can be as interesting as any fiction out there.

Although it is critical for students to read the classics, I feel that it is equally important for them to read modern literature by respected authors.

I want what they read to be relevant and discussable and even enjoyable. I want them to talk about the book outside of class and even to remember it 20 years later. Also, good readers make good writers. These are the things I want for my kids.
