Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are industrious, energetic, creative, and full of ingenuity. They are honor roll students, who thrive on the time they are able to be in the studio art room. They have ideas that they want to explore using mixed medium. Our school is a Title I school, surrounded by art galleries.
This is the first set of AP Art classes offered at our school. We will explore specific painting techniques, through the study of specific painters. We will incorporate three dimensional sculpting with the painterly. Students have sketched out their ideas of what they would like to think about and create. We have organized this project to inject the materials that we would need to actualize their visualizations.
By doing this independent study, with these materials in our classroom, we will be allowed to explore, discover and create. We will struggle through the obstacles we encounter, build our decision making skills, decide which mistakes to keep, and evolve our compositions as we discuss, read, study and assess a work in process.
Students will learn color theory, sculpting, bending techniques, abstract, and hyper-realism. Through this process self confidence in each individual will be built. New perspectives and ideas will be formulated. Students will be more confident in college.
"We love art, and painting gives us an outlet that we get nowhere else in our lives. This school with this teacher is the only opportunity we have for painting. So, we would like to have canvases to last us for the next three months of this school year. These canvases will allow us to practice specific techniques, and provide an nicer school environment when we hang up the work we are proud of, around our hallways and classrooms. Our canvases will not be discarded. We will always paint on top of our last painting until we have created a painted that fills us with confidence and pride.
In Their Own Words
We are students who want to attend Pratt Institute, FIT, Parsons and SVA. These art schools need to see that we have experience using many kinds of materials. Painting teaches people how to make good decisions quickly. Making disciplined decisions is good training for college. Painting is healing and relaxing. It allows a person to center themselves to their inner truth, so that they can face and work out their difficulties. We want to become more culturally and artistically aware artists.
We will use the materials immediately! We are waiting for these canvases. If our parents could afford to buy us brushes and canvases, we would not need to write this grant. We are painters, we know it. We've used all of the tempera paint we had. Our teacher wants to teach us painting techniques now and has brought easels and paint into our classroom with grants. She had hoped that we would be able to afford canvases and brushes."
