I am an art teacher in a very small school that includes many incredible artists. We are part of a larger district, but my school includes around 180 students total for grades Pre-k thru 8th. The district is Title I and is largely a lower socioeconomic, rural community.
I have a class of 6th grade I see twice per week and 2 7th-8th grade classes of students that I see everyday and we work hard on improving our skills and finding new ways to be creative.
We compete in an art competition every April and my students have consistently won many awards for their artwork. They love art and learning new techniques and being able to use different materials.
My Project
Most of my students have never had the opportunity to create an artwork on a canvas. We have only had the materials to create on paper. My students have the skills to create quality work and I know they would love to have a canvas to create a lasting artwork on.
My students mainly use tempera paint and I would like to expose them to using more types of paint including acrylic.
I also have plans to use the acrylic paint that we have left to create a collaborative mural for our art hallway. I want my students to have opportunities to learn to create together.
