My Students

I teach art to 720 2nd and 3rd grade students each week. Most of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. The majority of my students are African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian. I am new to this art position, and inherited very little in the way of art supplies. I painted a large mural on the wall over the summer to get the students excited about art again, as the program had fallen to the wayside over the past few years.

My Project

I teach 30 classes of second and third graders, totaling 720 students a week. Last year, my students mostly used crayons and markers. I’m new to this school, and I’ve worked so hard to add to the program. My students have never had the opportunity to paint on canvas before. I would like to have them paint a floral still life on canvas and give them to their parents as a gift. I have done a project like this at a previous school and it was such a hit, but the funding at this school is low for art supplies, and we have so many students!
