My students need hands-on items to help them learn how to identify and express their social/emotional needs using Emotion-oe games, Build Me Emotion Legos, feelings puzzles and Tiggly technology games.
Our preschool class is made up of 15 three to five year olds. For many our classroom is their first experience in a classroom setting. The students come to school each day ready to explore, investigate, and enjoy their world. It is my goal to expose them to all the possibilities available to enhance their social and emotional skills. Our school is in a very rural area, where many of the students receive free and reduced lunch as well as Title I and NCPrek funding.
As students in a low-income/high poverty school district, they are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Some of the students in my classroom have delays in various developmental areas. We work hard to ensure they get the best available learning experiences while at school.
Our students are energetic, curious, creative and eagerly waiting to soak up as much knowledge as possible.
They love creating new friendships and participating in all school activities. We work daily on developing the whole child. We help the students enhance their social and emotional skills as well as academics skills. We teach the whole child.
My Project
The materials I have requested for my classroom already have a purpose and a place in the classroom. I want to provide a safe, nurturing, caring environment for my students. With the use of feelings puzzles, Emotion-oes, Emotion Legos and interactive iPad games students can identify an emotion or feeling as they play in small group or on on one instructions. All these items are items that can be used by the student with a disability as well as the typically developing student. We are also requesting a boundary net for use when we take our learning groups outside and want to ensure the safety of our children.
Young children have a wide range of emotions at any given time and learning to identify those feeling and emotions through the use of these items will help children learn and grow.
Preschool students often struggle with how to handle the numerous emotions they feel in a day. When using puzzles, Legos and iPad games the students will learn to recognize and verbally express those feelings and emotions. This is a skill that a child can take with them into adulthood.
In our classroom we use SEFEL strategies. SEFEL is the Social-Emotional Foundations of Early Learning. The different games, puzzles, books, songs, and technology we are requesting are SEFEL related and can help promote a child's social and emotional development. I have seen firsthand how using items like the ones requested help children grow in their social/emotional skills.
