I teach 18 of the best fourth graders. These students are motivated to learn and are determined to meet the goals they set for themselves. During my math class, when students finish their homework, they move on to another math activity whether that be reviewing skills we've already practiced or applying their knowledge to extend the concept we're currently working on. Coding would be another option for this time. We would also focus on coding during our technology and science time.
My students love technology.
They love having an understanding of how something works and learning how a new website or app works. My students need more opportunities to explore coding and problem-solving skills.
My Project
Students need to have an understanding of how technology works. Coding will give students the opportunity to problem-solve in a logical way as well as encouraging them to be creative and think outside the box. Students will be navigating Botley the robot through obstacle courses, programming it to avoid objects, and creating looping patterns. Working with these robots will also give my students the chance to practice collaboration, communication, and leadership skills.
When I asked my students how they were going to change the world, several of them said through technological advances.
What better way to start this by learning how to code?
