Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students' first formal school experience is going to be anything but conventional in 2020-2021.
As our virtual doors shut for the summer, I am already brainstorming ways to make learning meaningful, accessible and effective even if it is 6 feet apart next year.
Before distance learning, our main goal in my classroom was to learn, practice, and utilize the social-emotional skills required to joyfully work and learn with fellow human beings. Our priorities abruptly shifted to distance learning while addressing family and student mental health during these unpredictable times.
From decades of teaching, I know children thrive when learning is live, interacting with their peers and teacher. This summer I am committed to figuring out how to provide authentic, organic learning opportunities for my students in the classroom and at home while following social distancing guidelines.
My Project
It's time for us to face the music of our new "normal"...social distancing. Many students do not have the means to simply go out and purchase learning materials to keep at home so it is imperative that we provide them for them.
The days of hugs and sharing learning materials will be put on hold for the year.
This is a difficult reality especially for students, parent teachers, and childcare teachers during distance learning days. Clear dividers will enable them to at least see each other's faces while learning. Since sharing any materials will be forbidden, we will need individual containers to hold their own personal set of crayons, play dough, math tools and hands on learning materials. Students can take their learning tools to and from home while they engage in distance learning. Since there will most likely be an exchange or materials pick up involved, I envision students and teachers feeling very emotional about a rare social interaction. Of course, masks will probably be mandated. However, there may be an opportunity to see each other's smiles if we had some type of protective see-through divider between us. With that hope in mind, I have requested acrylic dividers in my project. We can do this and we will rise to this new challenge of social distancing at home and childcare during their distance learning days.
