I never realized that Thursday, March 12, would be the last time I would see my kindergarten babies for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. I didn't get to give them a proper farewell. Had I known that COVID-19 would shut schools down permanently, our quick goodbyes would've looked very different than they did on that last day we shared together.
Fast forward two months later, and I am working harder and putting in more time than ever teaching virtually from home each day.
I am doing my very best with limited resources and supplies to prepare my littles for first grade. Due to school buildings being closed and not being able to gather needed resources and supplies to help me deliver effective instruction remotely, my students and I need your support.
I teach in a Title I school in which 84% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. About 40% of my students are English Language Learners. Although many of my students face adversity, their challenges do not define their ability to learn and be successful students. I teach twenty of the sweetest and most eager 5- and 6-year-olds. Their desire to learn in the midst of a pandemic has not faltered.
Due to school closures and financial challenges, many families are not able to provide their students with the materials and resources they need to continue learning from home on a daily basis.
Providing students with basic supplies such as pencils, scissors, and glue sticks will enable them to continue their learning from the safety of their home environments.
In addition, providing students with books will allow students to use the strategies and skills they've learned at school to continue to develop as readers. Your support will give my students the best opportunity to be better prepared for first grade in the fall when school resumes.
