I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are a Title I school and serve many socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and the primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity.
I teach both Spanish and English Language Development at the middle school level and my goal is for all of my students to grow in language proficiency, literacy, and autonomy.
My long-term English learners are often self-professed non-readers, and I am on a mission to change that!
My Project
The graphic novels section of my classroom library is the most browsed and borrowed--my middle schoolers just can't get enough of these books! They have helped me hook some of my most reluctant readers.
Students who used to groan when I announced Free Choice Reading now come to class begging to have time to read and complain when I tell them that reading time is over.
Many of the books in this project are student requests, and the rest come from a published list of the most highly recommended novels for middle schoolers. I am so thrilled to see the power that these novels have to win over my students, so I'm on a mission to fill my shelves with more of the books that they've been enjoying.
