Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students do not have a supplies list at the beginning of the year because it can be a struggle just to get to school. Buying art supplies is the least of their worries or necessities.
My school opens the door to serve at-risk youth in an urban inner-city location.
They come to our school because their traditional school could not meet their needs. We offer an opportunity to help them get back on track and help them cross that finish line of graduating with a high school diploma and the tools they need to survive into adulthood.
My Project
For this project I am requesting forty pre-stretched art canvases. In my Art classes, I offer students a challenge to explore and dig deep within themselves to create and produce an original image such as a Picasso inspired self-portrait or nature-scales. While paper is available, let's face it, it is fragile and tears easily. Painting on canvas allows the artist mobility and security. It also allows more permanence. Perhaps they will enter art competitions with their original creations, give it as a gift, or hang it up in their home. I am sure it will come with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Can you imagine a baker without an oven or a writer without a pen?
Well, in my Art classes, we do not have any canvas this year but with your help you can make that change. It begins with paint on a brush applied to canvas to create something original and personal. Their art begins with your generous contribution. Thank you for your consideration!
