I teach children with varying exceptionalities, such as specific learning disabilities, autism, vision impairment, and cerebral palsy. My students are at least two grade levels behind their same age peers.
We are a Title I school which means many of the children come from impoverished backgrounds.
They have parents that are absentee, intellectually disabled, or not well educated. Many students are part of the Hunger Project which helps feed them on weekends.
In my room, the students are able to work on their level and at the pace they need. We are trying to ensure that they get the most out of their education.
My Project
Every year I teach my students about the human body because I think it’s important for them to understand how their body works and how to care for it .
In order to make learning fun and hands-on we culminate our month long study with a candy man.
The students use candy to recreate the systems of the body, such as Twizzlers for muscles, Tootsie Rolls for a liver, and Double Bubble for a brain . The man will have a Junior Carmel for a bladder and a Swedish Fish for a stomach, as well as Gummi Worms for intestines . We will use Fruit Slices as lungs . He will even produce a Hershey Kiss poop .
