My class is a vibrant group of second graders, ages seven and eight, at a Title I school in East Palo Alto, CA. They are smart, talented, and excited to learn! We consider ourselves a school family and support each other every day to work hard, reach our goals, and learn from our mistakes. My goal is to provide my students with resources and materials that will spark their creativity and create a passion for learning.
My students live less than ten minutes away from some of the largest tech companies in the world and an Ivy League school, yet the high school graduation rate for their zip code is 50%.
I want to set my students up on a pathway to success and college for certain! I am committed to providing them with an equitable quality of education compared to that of what students receive in neighboring affluent school districts.
I am asking for decorations and props to create a Candy Land room transformation. I plan on transforming my classroom in to a candy wonderland based on the popular children's board game. Students will work through "break out" challenges to unlock the candy castle. They will work through different stations to "unlock" each challenge, and receive a piece to their puzzle.
Students will complete reading comprehension questions, addition and subtraction with regrouping problems, a science experiment, an art project, and vocabulary and phonics games.
Once all the challenges are complete students will get the combination to unlock their groups box and get a sweet reward inside. By providing students with this experience they will be deeply engaged in mastering the content. By having a novel, exciting challenge, students will deeply internalize the content that needs to be mastered in our third school quarter.
