My Students

We are a rural school with many students from families with low income. These students work hard with little and make much out of it. Many would begin band but can not afford to buy or rent instruments so we seek to have loaner instruments available. One student began on clarinet but wanted to also play in jazz and borrowed a trombone, coming in at 7 am every morning her eighth grade year and sat in my office practicing to play trombone. She graduated this year, having earned honorable mention state jazz band for Michigan schools at state jazz festival. Another is a bass player and drummer who graduated this year and received a large scholarship to attend Berkeley College of Music. From little, these kids create much. Our high school bands consistently get high marks at our festival and our jazz band will perform at the Detroit Jazz Fest.

My Project

We currently have 42 stands at our middle school. I have been told my seventh and eighth grade band has 57 enrolled. We need more stands! I have asked for 2 packs of 6 stands which will give us 52 total. I have 37 beginners so next year we will need every stand! The stands will give each student a stand to hold their music. Students need to have their own music and stand at this age to make notations on their own parts. We will continue to use method books and I want them to mark things in their books to aid in practice.
