My Students

Each of my students are of high school age and are on the Autism Spectrum. They each have a variety of intellectual, social communication, and sensory impairments. Although my students travel to various classes a few times a day, the majority of their day is spent in the ASD classroom where they work on academic skills, social skills, as well as functional life skills.

Depsite my students many struggles throughout the day, they also struggle with independence and day to day living skills.

It is my job as a teacher to promote healthy living and to develop the skills to become a successful adult. One way we do this is through cooking.

My Project

Learning to cook is a skill that will last a lifetime. This proposal will provide our classroom with basic kitchen essentials that we can use right in the classroom that go along with our lessons. With our life skills curriculum, the students learn about making healthy and yummy recipes that are easy to make at school and at home to help to increase their knowledge in food preparation and promote independence in the kitchen.

Although some students are harder to motivate than others, I have yet to meet a student who wasn't motivated to participate in some way during cooking lessons.

We use a variety of strategies and can touch on a variety of skills when cooking such as using visual recipes to promote reading skills, measuring ingredients to incorporate math, turn taking, following directions, and even socialization with their peers. Cooking in the classroom also gives the students the ability to try new things that they may not try at home. And if they like it, they can easily take the recipes home and make the food for their families.
