Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher I have learned that no two students, no matter how hard I try, learn the same way. Each fits into different parameters that make them not only unique, but also a pleasure to work with. Each day, I try to differentiate and provide my students with as many pictures, drawings, graphic organizers, and other visual aids to help them learn all the content I cover throughout the year. This task has become increasingly difficult because I do not have a screen to project images on to or use an overhead with.
As a Teach for America corps member instructing 7th grade science, I feel honored each day knowing that I am impacting the lives of children in a major way. Yet, I still become frustrated as I have to project images onto the wall or ceiling rather than a projection screen. Because I use the wall, I am sometimes unable to hang up student work. Additionally, since I share my classroom with the 5th grade science teacher, space is at a premium. As a result, even when I do use a projector, my students often can not see and are forced to crowd around the overhead projector and me to see the visual parts of my lessons. Just doing a simple Venn diagram, causes half of my class to crowd around me as I was explain the similarities and differences between asexual and sexual reproduction.
A projector screen would enable my students to sit at their desks, fully attentive and taking notes, while I project images for them. This way, they are not forced to try to remember what was written down or pass around an overhead sheet. With a projector, my students can use graphic organizers, learn to take better notes, see me work through and mark up a text and do any number of other activities that having visually would aide in their grasping of the content fully. My classroom has limited space, so a wall mounted projector screen would be greatly beneficial to my students learning.
I appreciate your time and your generosity will be used to the fullest extent.
