I teach incredible middle school students living with Autism and/or intellectual disabilities. The are all unique and amazing and have different strengths and needs. All of them love being part of the school community and try their best at everything they do.
Everyone needs breaks throughout the day to be successful.
Whether you meditate, exercise or just take a minute to yourself, these are the things that help us do what we need to do. My students are no different, they just need extra support during those breaks. Some of them like to rock, play with fidget toys, or just look at something cool. They all need the opportunity to find what can help them through the day and be successful students.
My Project
One of my middle school boys is going through a though transition in his life. It is difficult for him to understand what is happening, but he knows things are changing in his body. One of his biggest sensory needs is rocking. Currently he is using an old rocking chair that is in the hallway of the school. He needs a chair in the classroom that he can use everyday. Rocking calms him and lets him focus on what he needs to to in the classroom.
All of my students require different sensory breaks, and are in need of options and resources.
I want them all to be successful, and they can be with appropriate materials.
