We've all read books where we can see ourselves in the place of the main character. Books come alive when you have this kind of connection! But what happens if you cannot see yourself in the books you read?
For students, books can be a great way to learn about the world they live in.
I teach in a district where more than half of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students come from hard-working families that are trying to make ends meet. There is little money left over to buy books. My students are active learners and are begging for more books to read!
My Project
It is important for students to see themselves in the books they read. Quality titles should be relatable.
Students enjoy reading titles with characters who look like them, it helps form a connection to the book on another level.
Identifying with the characters in a story allows for a deeper comprehension of the text because students are able to make self connections.
I would like to provide quality titles for my students to read during our independent reading time. Our school library is closed right now. I would like to provide a variety of titles with engaging plots, conflicts, and characters.
I want books that act as mirrors and windows for my students, books that allow for a deeper and more well-rounded reading experience for them!
