As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I recognize that my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are an amazing, vibrant group of students who are ready to learn and who deserve the very best.
We are a high-performing, Title I elementary school in Nevada.
Many of my students come to kindergarten without prior access to preschool. Our ultimate goal is to have our students reading, writing, adding, and subtracting by the time they leave kindergarten. We accomplish this through various hands-on activities that are engaging, interactive, and fun.
My Project
Some of my students still struggle to see the whiteboard clearly even with glasses. I want to give them an opportunity to move close to the whiteboard using portable lap desks and small "my size" wooden desk. It’s important that my students can see the work displayed so they can take advantage of every learning opportunity presented to them. A child’s visual system is responsible for about 80% of what they learn!
Students who struggle in the classroom setting are at risk of falling behind.
That can be the beginning of lifelong self-esteem issues and a negative feeling about reading, writing or learning. We have whole group time on a large ABC rug which is right in front of our whiteboard. Because of this our classroom desks and tables are set farther back. I want to give students the means to move to the "front of the class" using the lap desks and wooden desks. This way they can see AND do their work up front and close!
